Summary:
The proposed trail system includes approximately 319 km of trails at high elevations on Hawaii Island. The main trail follows the southeast and northwest flanks of Mauna Loa and runs north to Hualalai. Side trails run from Hualalai to Puuanahulu, to Mokuaweoweo at the summit of Mauna Loa from the north and south, and over the southwest rift of Mauna Loa in two places. Significant historic sites in the vicinity of the proposed trail system have been identified and both the potential impacts of trail use on the cultural sites and management strategies to mitigate those impacts have been discussed.
