Summary:
The Santalaccae or Sandalwood family comprises of approximately twenty-five related groups of plants. This document describes various kinds of true Sandalwood (Iliahi) that belong to the group known as the Santalum family. These plants include the Hawaiian Mistletoe (or the hulumoa or kaumahana), a member of the Loranthaccae family, the Mamani tree (or Edwardsia chrysophylla), the Gorse (or Ulex europaeus), and the Pigeon Pea (or Cajanus cajan), members of the Leguminosac or Pea family. Also included, in the Santalum family are the Silversword and Greensword. Members of the silversword family are the Haleakala silversword (A. Macrocephalum of A. Gray), also known as pohinahina or ahinahina -- variations of the word gray, the Hawaii silversword (A. sandwicense DC), and the Eke silversword (Argyroxiphium caligini Forbes). Members of the greensword family are the Haleakala Greensword (or Argyroxiphium virescens Hilleb), and a very rare Argyroxiphium -- a plant that was once considered a variety of the Eke silversword, but will eventually be considered a second kind of this greensword that will later bear the name Argyroxiphium Kai. Reference is also made with regard to how Captain John Kendrick, a New Englander, began the sandalwood industry in the Hawaiian Islands, how the industry grew to huge proportions and reached its height from 1810 to 1820 due to its trade with China, the plight of the industry during the reign of Kamehameha the Great, how the industry ended before 1845 due to the exporting of these plants, and the lack of replanting, as well as the current status of the silversword.
