Summary:
Avipoxvirus has had serious effects on the long term recovery of Hawaii's endemic forest birds such as the Hawaii Amakihi (Hemignathus vires). At least three variants are present in Hawaii - Fowlpox, Pox Variant 1 and Pox Variant 2, that are most similar to Canarypox. A test was done to evaluate whether a commercial vaccine, such as a live Canarypox vaccine called Biomune Poximmune C (Ceva Biomune, Lenexa, KS), could be used: 1) as a tool for protecting threatened and endangered captive-reared or wild honeycreepers during release or translocation, or 2) for protecting critically endangered wild populations that face significant threats from disease transmissions. This paper describes the methods that were used and the results of the study.
