Summary:
The Hawaii Forest Bird Interagency Database Project has produced a centralized and relational database of more than 800,000 forest bird survey data collected in Hawaii since the mid-1970's. We synthesized information from 66 separate variable circular plot (VCP) surveys for forest birds on the north Hamakua Region of the Island of Hawaii from 1977-2000. The objectives of this study were to (1) estimate the distribution, abundance, and status of native and exotic forest birds in Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge; (2) examine trends in forest bird densities over time; and (3) evaluate the effectiveness of the current monitoring program to detect changes in forest bird populations. The study area encompasses 648-km(super2) of mid- to high-elevation montane rain forest on the northeastern slope of Mauna Kea volcano, including the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge (HFNWR) and surrounding public and private lands. Birds included in the study were the Hawaii Amakihi (Hemignathus virens virens), Akiapolaau (Hemignathus munroi), and Hawaii Akepa (Loxops coccineus coccineus).
