Summary:
The Hawaiian Endangered Bird Conservation Program is a unique partnership composed of government agencies (the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, State of Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife, and the U.S. Geological Survey, Biological Resources Division), non-profit conservation organizations (the Zoological Society of San Diego), and private land-owners (Kamehameha Schools, the Alala, Kauai and Maui Partnerships). The Hawaiian Endangered Bird Conservation Program had the following goals between October 1, 2001 to September 30, 2002: 1) Continue the restoration programs for the endangered Puaiho (Myadestes palmeri); 2) Continue captive breeding of the Alala (Corvus hawaiiensis) and Nene (Nesochen sandvicensis); 3) If found, collect wild eggs from Maui Parrotbill (Pseudonestor xanthophrys), Akiapolaau (Hemignathus munroi), and "on the brink" species to develop captive propagation techniques and restoration programs; 4) Continue to define and refine the long-term captive husbandry and breeding protocols for endemic Hawaiian passerines; 5) Continue the environmental education program and rehabilitate and renovate facilities at the Maui Bird Conservation Center; 6) In collaboration with the Division of Forestry and Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service develop a draft programmatic Five Year Workplan for the Hawaiian Endangered Bird Conservation Program; and 7) Acquire funding to match operational responsibilities.
