Summary:
This document gives a timeline of astronomy in Hawaii that started with the replacement of a radio antenna atop the 10,025-foot high summit of Haleakala on Maui in the 1940's, to the construction of the Mauna Loa Observatory that was built at the 11,134-foot level on Mauna Loa in 1956, the construction of a UH 88" telescope on the summit of Mauna Kea in 1965. This then lead to the construction of the Canada France Hawaii Telescope and the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope in 1973, the Infrared Telescope Facility in 1974, the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope in 1982, Keck I in 1984, the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory in 1986, the Gemini North 8 Meter Telescope in 1989, the Very Long Baseline Array and the Subaru Telescope in 1992, the Giant Segmented Aperture Telescope in 2000, and the Submillimeter Array in 2003.
