Summary:
The Mauna Kea and Haleakala are Hawaiian volcanoes, sacred to Hawaiians, and home to world renowned astronomy observatories. The author proposed some management approaches to develop and protect the mountains: plan making, zoning, rules and regulations, and carrying capacity. Hawaiian participation in management would ensure more protection. International cooperation in astronomical data sharing could avoid the construction of additional telescopes on these mountains, and for any new telescope built an old one could be eliminated.
