- Summary:
- This document describes a field trip that proceeded across the center of Hawaii, circled the northern part of the island, and continued around Mauna Kea where rocks from Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and Hualalai volcanoes were examined. The trip began at the Naniloa Surf Hotel, through Banyan Drive, to Kaumana Cave, up the Saddle Road, (that runs between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea), to Puu Huluhulu, onto the Waikoloa Road, to the Queen Kaahumanu Highway, to Hapuna Beach, and to a lava channel from an 1800 flow -- a site for alkali olivine basalt and xenoliths of mafic and ultramafic rocks. The tour continued on to a scenic overlook that offered a view of the north flank of Hualalai, the southwest flank of the Kohala Mountain, and a view of Haleakala Volcano on the island of Maui. The next area visited provided a view of a radial drainage that was developed on Puu Waawaa, a trachyte cone on Hualalai's north rift zone. The tour then continued with a stop at a hawaiite flow, through Waimea, and on to a Waipio Valley overlook. The last stop was at a scenic point that offered a view of Laupahoehoe Point after which the journey continued back to Hilo.
