Lyman recounts stories about the Wilkes expedition's visit to Hilo, a trip to Kilauea caldera in 1844, his assistance to C. Lyman in a surveying party in 1851, an ascent of Mauna Kea in 1851, and observation of the 1843 eruption of Mauna Loa. The black ledge was 800 ft. down from the rim of Kilauea in 1844.
