Job progress report, research project segment. Project no. W-5-R, Wildlife management research. Feral animal survey, Mauna Kea feral sheep
Year:
1968
Subject:
Feral sheep Mauna Kea
Summary:
Two ground counts conducted during November 1967 and January 1968 provided information on flock composition and distribution. Ewe: lamb ratio and the percentage of lambs in the various age classes indicate that normal breeding seasons occurred, although the total size of the lamb crops may have been reduced. No significant shifts in the population appear to have occurred during the year as both ground counts plus an aerial count indicated concentrations of sheep on the western and southern slopes of Mauna Kea. The objectives of this study were to determine the distribution and movements of the population of feral sheep and the breeding habits, reproductive rate, and decimating factors affecting the feral sheep on Mauna Kea.
