Summary:
A total of 68 stations were baited with diphacinone (Eaton's Bait Blocks) in the critical palila habitat on Mauna Kea to control rats and mice. The presence of rodents was monitored by reading tracks on an ink covered surface where rodents were attracted to coconut. A total of 150 tracking boards were installed near the bait stations. A study was initiated to establish the efficacy of Ramic Green Rodenticide (0.005% diphacinone) on wild caught rats in Hawaii to help in determining broadcast application rates in the field. Cat and mongoose trapping was initiated during the same period within the Kaohe Game Management Area. An aerial survey of feral ungulates was conducted on Mauna Kea and a total of 192 feral sheep and mouflon was located. Access roads have been improved to encourage hunters to remove sheep from the palila habitat.
