Summary:

Hiram Bingham, a member of the American Oriental Society and Late Missionary of the American Board, gives a particular view of the missionary operations connected with the introduction and progress of Christianity and civilization among the Hawaiian People. He describes an ascent of Mauna Kea and a visit to Kilauea Caldera, in 1830. The "black edge" was about 600 feet below the caldera rim, and the active lava lake was in a depression about 400 feet deeper. The conception of a volcano as a "safety valve" is stated.
