Summary:
The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine prepared this handbook for military medical personnel supporting military units operating in the high altitude in dealing with acute mountain sickness (AMS), high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) and high altitude cerebral edema (HACE). These syndromes are specific to high terrestrial altitude, in contrast to other environmentally related medical conditions such as sunburn, dehydration and cold injury which are common in high mountains, but also seen frequently in other environments. This handbook is designed to be a resource for use by military medical personnel supporting military operations in the high mountains. It contains information on environmentally related medical problems that occur at high altitude, as well as effects of soldier- and mission-related factors that may have medical and operational concerns.
