Mauna Loa Eruption, 1917
- Summary:
- The author, Harry O. Wood, first describes the eruption that began May 19, 1916 as was observed by Captain D. F. Nicholson of the steamship, "Hamakua" and by Mrs. R. A. McWayne of Papa. The author later provides notes of a hurried reconnaissance of the Kahuku branches of the eruption that was done on May 30 and 31. This two-day observation includes an itinerary of the route that was taken, geographical notes, sources of the eruption, the source of the earliest outbreak, the source of the flow, the observations that were taken near the source of the eruption, the Kahuku branches of the flow, the flow-source segment of the eruption, the Solfatara-Spatter-Cone segment, the products of the flow, the textures of the lava, the ejected products of the eruption, and the distant observation of the upper source of the eruption where the outbursts of fumes occurred on May 19th. However, due to the complicated sequence of the observations and the order in which it is presented, makes for a somewhat extended and rambling account of the observations.
