Summary:
The authors used point‐transect distance sampling to estimate the abundance of Hawaii Akepas in portions of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park (HAVO) and the Kau Forest Reserve (KFR) on Mauna Loa volcano and to determine the population densities in each habitat. Densities were highest in open‐canopy montane ohia (Metrosideros polymorpha) woodland. While densities of the largest Akepa population on Mauna Kea volcano were highest in closed‐canopy ohia and koa (Acacia koa) forest where the species is dependent on nest cavities in tall, large trees.
