Subject:
Earthquakes Mauna Kea site surveys
Summary:
In order for a ground-based interferometer to measure fringes, the baseline must be extremely stable. A major concern for ground-based interferometers is whether microseismic activity produces a sufficiently high level of noise to set the ultimate limit on resolution. The microseismic measurements made at Mauna Kea show both the absolute and differential displacements for two stations separated by 80 meters. In addition, several sources of man-made noise which can have serious consequences have also been identified.
