- The author initiated a study of Hawaii Akepa in the vicinity of the Kahuku Ranch cabin above the Kau Forest Reserve on Mauna Loa.The mature Ohia forest in the area hosts the highest density of Akepa on Mauna Loa. Patterns of capture and recapture in nets in different locations show that both sexes exhibit site tenacity. However, site tenacity and high annual survival of adults has the potential to restrict mating and breeding opportunities for young, reproductively mature birds attempting to enter the breeding population of the area.
