- The ecological benefits of koa reforestation areas (KRAs) to forest bird conservation are investigated at Kakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on the windward side of Mauna Kea and Keauhou Ranch on the windward side of Mauna Loa. Hawaii Amakihi, Elepaio, Omao, Akiapolaau, Iiwi, and Apapane have been found colonized the KRAs. The KRAs can provide foraging habitat for Hawaiian forest birds and enhance native understory development.
