- Three proposals were submitted to NASA. Dr. Kuiper proposed a 60-inch telescope while Dr. Menzel proposed a 84-in one and got NASA's endorsement. UH submitted its own proposal due to the caretaker role relegated by Dr. Menzels proposal. However, UH would like to cooperate with the 28-in telescope installation on Mauna Kea for Dr. Johnson's project.
