Summary:
To support the national space programs, requirements for Earth-based telescopes are outlined in the memorandum. Of the existing and potential observatory sites, Mauna Kea is regarded as the most promising observatory site in U.S. Mauna Kea Observatory is 42 miles from Hilo which has an airport accommodating jets. The state and county government officials support strongly the development of Mauna Kea by preparing the road and power line to the summit. As a result, future development of Mauna Kea has been proposed: 1). Move the 28-inch telescope and the 20-foot dome from Catalina Station to Mauna Kea; 2).Construct a 60-inch optical telescope; 3).Construct a 10-15 foot IR telescope; 4). Lab and living quarters at Hale Pohaku base camp.
