Subject:
Conservation District Use Application (CDUA) University of Hawaiʻi 24-inch telescope observatory
Summary:
This Conservation District Use Application (CDUA) was filed with the Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) in order to obtain a permit to renovate the existing 24-inch telescope building within the Resource Subzone of the Conservation District at Mauna Kea, Hamakua, Hawaiʻi (Tax Map Key 4-4-15:09). The purpose of the proposed renovation is the conversion of a research facility to an educational one, in support of the UH Hilo undergraduate astronomy program and affiliated school/community outreach programs. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has funded the purchase of a modern, 36-inch telescope optimized for educational use to replace the existing, 38-year old, 24-inch telescope. The University of Hawaiʻi proposes to renovate the existing, 420 sf observatory building in order to accommodate the new instrument in a fully functional, weather-tight observatory; principally for use in student training.
