- Summary:
- This guidebook covers a one-day field trip that circles the northern half of the island of Hawaii, beginning and ending in Hilo (Fig. 1). The trip is designed to provide a brief overview of the geology of three of the fine volcanoes that comprise the island and an introduction to the evolution of the Hawaiian landscape. Stops and discussion will focus on the products of historic and prehistoric eruptions, volcanic stratigraphy and chronology, and on the relationship between the development of island landforms and changing environmental conditions during the last half million years. The radiometric chronology for Mauna Kea and Kohala volcanoes is based largely on unpublished preliminary results of K-Ar dating by G. B. Dalrymple and B. D. Turrin. Radiocarbon ages cited for Mauna Loa flows were determined by Meyer Rubin and his associates (Rubin et al., 1987). Mileage for the field trip begins at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel parking lot.
