Summary:
A dwarf alpine juniper tree, wedged among rocks at Lake Waiau, is believed to be the sole survivor of an experiment from 1929 to 1933 by the State Forestry Division of the Department of Land and Natural Resources to determine if conifers would grow at 13,000 feet in tropical Hawaii. It was discovered by Dr. Alred H. Woodcock, UH's Hawaii Institute of Geophysics, who studied the lake sediments.
