Hawaii Akepa Loxops coccineus coccineus Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge
Summary:
The author studied demographic traits between large and small Hawaii Akepa populations in the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge. No important differences were found in annual adult survival, reproductive success, age structure, mean fat level, mean weight, external indicators of disease, or sex ratios. Since both populations have been relatively stable over the past 15 years, the differences in environmental carring capacity may have resulted in the current patterns of bird density.
