Summary:
The shape of volcanic cones can be quantified usingthe crater/cone base ration and the cone height/width ratio. The variability in these rations has been attributed to the effect of erosion or eruptive conditions on cone morphometry. Two new geomorphometry datasets for cone fields at Mauna Kea (Hawaii, USA) and Lanzarote (Canary Island, Spain) are extracted and analyzed. The key observation in these datasets is the great variability in morphometric ratios. GIS analysis and analogy experiments as well as the cones documented in the field suggest that the morphometric ratios for well-preserved volcanic cones are controlled by the cone material properties, eruption conditions, the local setting, and the method used to estimate the cone height.
