Drought
Lake Waiau
- Summary:
- Lake Waiau, located just below Mauna Kea summit, is the only alpine lake in the Hawaiian Islands. It is fed mainly by sporadic winter storms. The size of the lake flunctuates with variations in precipitation. But in recent years, the water level gets lower remarkably and in December 2013 reached to just 100-200 square meters in area. Historical records of Lake Waiau showed the lake area changes in the range of 5000-7000 square meters. The drought in Hawaii Island since 2008 may have contributed to the drastic decrease of the lake area. More research and historical data set are needed in understanding the true cause of the phenomenon.
