Hamilton, Thomas
University of Hawaii
- Summary:
- UH President Hamilton addressed the two questions raised in Akiyama's June 19 letter: applied research on lava and astronomical and space projects. Since lava is not unique to Hawaii, the most economical use for lava will be local use for roads, etc. Difficulties in accessing the summit of Mauna Loa or Mauna Kea offset the additional altitude gained over Haleakala. He also mentioned that Dr. Kuiper of the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory of the University of Arizona was considering tests on Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea for a new lunar and planetary observatory. He recommended improving the access roads to the two sites and set aside the summit of Mauna Loa and Puu Kahinahina as a scientific reserve.
