- Summary:
- LPL's Mauna Kea test program is NASA sponsored and is being followed with the greatest interest by Dr. Newell, Chief of Space Sciences, and Mr. Oran Nicks, Director of the Lunar and Planetary Program. But Dr. Nancy Roman, Head of the Astronomy Section at NASA, thinks that any NASA funded projects on Mauna Kea should be through University of Hawaii. In the meantime, Dr. Donald Holmes, Chief of the NASA Building Program of Support to Universities, invited Dr. Kuiper to visit Washington DC and discuss steps that NASA might take to make funding support to the University of Hawaii.
Dr. Kuiper thinks that it's not important who will ultimately do the scientific work on Hawaii's high mountains, as long as the work is done with competence. One of the most promising applications on Mauna Kea is in infrared research and the most brilliant men in the U.S. in this field are Dr. Harold Jognson of LPL and Dr. Frank Low of National Radio Observatory. Hope ways can be found to bring the top men and the best climatic conditions in the U.S. together.
