Mauna Kea Science Reserve Master Plan Sierra Club
Summary:
Mauna Kea Science Reserve Master Plan was approved by UH Board of Regents. The plan designated the vast majority of the Mauna Kea Science Reserve as a natural and cultural preservation area. 150 acres of the area are for astronomy facilities. Future development needs to have environmental analysis and cultural impact analysis first. Nelson Ho of Sierra Club thinks the plan still has some fundamental flaws including allowing for new telescopes, public access restrictions, and no observatory user fees to pay for environmental and cultural protections.
