Report of activities: 2003 field season on Mauna Kea
Year:
2003
Subject:
Mauna Kea Glaciers Olivine Xenoliths
Summary:
Five days were spent sampling moraines for cosmogenic nuclides ((super 3)He)) in September 2003. The basalts on the summit of Mauna Kea lack the olivine minerals required for (super 3)He measurements. The samples came primarily from the large, well-developed moraines associated with the last (Makanaka) glaciation. Reconnaissance work on the moraines on the north side of Mauna Kea suggests that bedrock in that area did not contain xenoliths. The results of this field work determined that suitable material for (super 3)He dating exists in many of the moraines on Mauna Kea, and the samples collected will provide strong chronological constraints on the glaciation of Mauna Kea.
