The Aipano trail, laid out by prehistoric Hawaiians, was about 34 miles long (almost 55 kilometers) and rose from 2,000 feet to 13,200 feet above sea level and is now lies abandoned. Mauna Loa trail from Kilauea crater to Mokuaweoweo was built by army in 1915. Accounts of historical trips up the two trails are described.
