Summary:
This master's degree thesis is the first technological study of Hawaiian adze manufacturing to use debitage from stratified and well-dated site in combination with experimental material. The primary purpose of this study is to determine through debitage analysis what stages of adze manufacture are represented in the successive occupations of Kookoolau Rockshelter No. 1, located at the Mauna Kea Adze Quarry Complex on the Island of Hawaii. Debitage from Kookoolau Rockshelter No. 1 at the Mauna Kea Adze Quarry, Hawaii, is analyzed to determine which stages of adze preform manufacture occurred within the rockshelter. The debitage analysis indicates that material brought to the rockshelter was already partially reduced. The frequencies of debitage types change only slightly through time, suggesting there is no major change in the pattern of rockshelter use through time.
