The article described what he had achieved during 19 years in Hawaii: from almost nothing to a solar observatory on Haleakala, Maui, and six telescopes on Mauna Kea, Hawaii Island. Dr. Jefferies will become the first director of the newly formed National Optical Astronomy Observatories (NOAO) which combined the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, Kitt Peak National Observatory and the National Solar Observatory.
