Summary:
A report on NASA's Kuiper Airborne Observatory, named after Dr. Gerard Kuiper, the late University of Arizona astronomer and founder of its Lunar and Planetary Laboratory. The observatory is made of a 36-inch telescope aboard a converted C-141 military cargo plane. It is equipped to observe in infrared wavelength at about 40,000 feet above sea level. Dr. Gerard Kuiper in 1965 first suggested to use the jet aircraft for infrared observations. With photos of the airplane and an illustration of the telescope.
