Venus is dry and hot, revealed by the 12-inch telescope and instruments aboard a NASA Convair 990 jet which flew at 37,000-foot altitude and above 99.5% of the earth's atmospheric water vapor. NASA will launch Mariner 5 to probe the cloud-shrouded planet during its flyby at 2,000 miles distance.
