The tarweeds (Compositae, tribe Heliantheae, subtribe Madinae) are one of the best known groups of western plants from the aspects of gross morphology, cytology, and genetics. The primary focus of this study is the definition of the subtribe and its genera, and the exposition of phyletic tendencies within the Madinae by combination of anatomical data with that of other disciplines.
