Summary:
This reference, although cited under Douglas, is by an anonymous author quoting from Douglas' correspondence. One quoted letter seems to confuse the various volcanoes and suggest, contrary to Douglas (1834, 1905), that Mauna Loa was in eruption in February 1834. [See annotation to Douglas, 1905.] The altitude of Mauna Loa is determined as 13,430 ft and that of Mauna Kea, 13,746 ft. Douglas visited Mokuaweoweo in January 1834. He states that Mokuaweoweo has an outer circumference of 24 mi, a black ledge lies 1,270 ft below the highest point of the rim, and another pit with a circumference of 6.25 mi lies within the black ledge. Douglas recognizes Mauna Loa to consist largely of lava flows. Soil beds between the flows near Kapapala were believed to represent breaks in the volcanic activity.
