Summary:
The authors use the island scale forcing mechanisms to study the band cloud movement on the island of Hawaii. Based on the 3-dimensional model described in Clark (1977), Clark and Farley (1984), and Smolarkiewicz and Clark (1986), the numerical simulations revealed that the band cloud is a complex 3-dimensional phenomenon inseparable from the airflow around the island and not primarily related to the diurnal cycle effects as some literature anticipated.
