Summary:
Twenty-eight analyses were reported for carbonized roots and other plant material collected from beneath 15 prehistoric lava flows that erupted from the northeast rift zone of the Mauna Loa volcano. Most samples were collected from the 7 1/2' quadrangle in Hilo that were taken during field work that was done for a geologic map of that quadrangle. In addition, a few sample sites were located in adjacent quadrangles from Piihonua, to the west, and from Mountain View, to the south. Samples were taken from Pahoehoe flows of Kualoa Road, the Kukuau ahupuaa, the Waiakea Stream, the Punahoa ahupuaa, Wilder Road, the Waiakea Homestead, the younger Waiakea Stream, Waianuenue Avenue, from the Picritic Aa flow of the Panaewa Forest Reserve, and from the Aa flows of the Puna Sugar fields, Ainaola Drive, Malaai Road, and from Rainbow Falls.
