Volcanoes Maui Olivine Mineralogy
Summary:
Even though Hawaiian lavas are generally of very simple mineral composition, little is known of the chemical characters of the minerals from which they are composed with augite and olivine being almost the only mafic minerals that are found in this lava. As a result, this study has afforded the authors the opportunity to determine the optical and chemical properties of Hawaiian augite crystals that were collected from Haleakala on the island of Maui. These crystals were found to be similar to augites that were found in many picrite-basalts on Mauna Kea, a volcano that is located on the island of Hawaii.
