Trace elements Basalt Olivine Magmatic differentiation
Summary:
In this study, petrologists used precise and accurate trace-elements data sets that were obtained by a variety of analytical techniques to model magmatic processes. An inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer was coupled to a modified Nd:YAG laser and used for the in situ determination of trace-element zonation and partition coefficients in olivines and clinopyroxenes from natural phenocryst-matrix systems. Among other findings, the partition coefficients determined in this study were consistent with previous studies in that the olivine partition coefficients for the REE are different for the two basalts.
