Summary:
In this document, a new species of brachypterous, a flightless jumping Thyrocopa moth, (T. kikaelekea) is described. This species inhabits the alpine area of Mauna Kea volcano and is endemic to the island of Hawaii, is described. This moth is similar in its outward appearance and jumping behavior to the also flightless Thyrocopa apatela (T. apatela), that inhabits the alpine areas on the island of Maui. As a result, the purpose of this study was to determine if the T. kikaelekea is the sister taxon to the T. apatela. However, based on male genetalia, it was found that this is not so.
