Subject:
Honeycreepers Owls Predation
Summary:
Two cases are cited in this document with regard to a Hawaiian Short-eared Owl (Pueo, Asio flammeus sandwichensis), predating a Maui Parrotbill, (Pseudonestor xanthophrys), nestling and a Apapane (Himatione sanguinea). However, in spite of this, the Pueo has not been considered a major threat to native forest birds as few honeycreeper and other bird remains were identified in the pellets of the Pueo as mentioned in this document. As a result, more research is necessary to determine the effect of removing small mammals on Pueo abundance, and the Pueo's impact on honeycreeper nest success.
