Summary:
C.W. Cross describes trachyte found at Puu Waawaa and Puu Anahulu, the first recognition of trachyte on the island of Hawaii. He provides a chemical analysis of the Puu Waawaa rock and a partial analysis of the Anahulu rock. He also recognizes Puu Waawaa as a cinder cone. Anahulu terrace is believed to be an erosional form, and Cross suggests that an ancient trachytic land mass may underlie Mauna Kea, Hualalai, and Mauna Loa. He speculates but reaches no conclusion on the origin of trachyte by differentiation from underlying basaltic parent. Cross discusses the relative age of the various Hawaiian Islands and suggests that volcanic activity began at the west end of the chain and shifted gradually eastward.
