- Summary:
- This document discusses the environmental and native cultural issues that astronomers have faced on Mount Graham in Arizona as well as on Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii. In an effort to mitigate the controversies that face Mauna Kea, an advisory committee was formed that brought together Hawaiian cultural groups, officials from the University of Hawaii, as well as others who use the mountain such as skiers and hunters in the hope of helping all groups to reach a common ground with regard to the future of astronomy on Mauna Kea. Finding common ground among the groups would determine the fate of the Next Generation Large Telescope and an optical interferometer array that could consist of up to thirty telescopes.
