- Summary:
- The subject of this study is the Verbascum thapsus. This Eurasian weed is a temperate invader that was introduced to the United States in the late 1700s, is usually a monocarpic biennial, has been well studied, and is documented to have a variable life history in the continental United States. However, since temperate invaders that use seasonal cues to influence their life histories may behave differently in the tropics, this study examined the variation in life history of this weed in the tropics as few studies have examined the life history of temperate plant invaders in the tropics. As a result, the Verbascum thapsus was studied across an elevation gradient of 1690 – 2720 meters along the montane and subalpine slopes of Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii.
