Summary:
Jaggar describes a visit to the source of the 1935 eruption. Most of the article describes a plan to build barriers across the northeast rift zone to divert lava toward Mauna Kea, as well as barriers upslope from Hilo designed to protect the harbor. He mentions the tendency of Mauna Loa eruptions to shift from the summit downrift where the force of gravity is lower. The article is illustrated by photographs of new 1935 lava in Mokuaweoweo and the recently constructed Mauna Loa resthouse [summit cabin].
