- Summary:
- Through the Hawaii Scientific Drilling Project, (HSDP), a detailed examination of the magmatic history of the upper part of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, (two Hawaiian shield volcanoes), was done. During this project, a hole that measured 1056 meters was drilled into the two overlapping volcanoes through which the lavas offered the potential to provide fundamental insights into the geochemical evolution of these volcanoes. This paper represents an overview of the petrography of the core, the composition of its most abundant phenocryst (olivine), and the composition of the glasses that form crusts on some of the pahoehoe flows. The implications of the results for the petrogenesis of Hawaiian shield lavas is also presented.
