Summary:
This document describes how the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge was established and managed in an effort to protect endangered and other native Hawaiian forest birds. Removing feral ungulates, controlling invasive alien plants, and reforesting former pastures were ways in which the restoration of the forest on the refuge was managed. Forest density was then estimated annually through distance sampling and examined population trends for native and alien passerines, in an effort to assess the effects of this habitat improvement for forest birds. This was done over the 21 years since the refuge was established with the results listed in this article.
