- Summary:
- Two collections of adult non-native ground beetle species, Agonum muelleri (Herbst) and (Coleoptera: Carabidae) were collected from two wekiu bug surveys that were done in 2006 and 2008 on the summit of Mauna Kea -- the first site in Hawaii where this alien European species has been observed. The discovery of this beetle in Hawaii indicates that a population of this accidentally-introduced species is established on this volcano that is located on the island of Hawaii. This report provides diagnostic characters that allow for the ready distinction of the non-native A. meulleri from all other native and non-native Carabidae that ocurs in the state of Hawaii. Recorded environmental conditions from the summit of Mauna Kea that taken during the months when specimens were collected are consistent with conditions associated with winged flight by A. muelleri individuals in the species’ native European range.
